Gavin McCallumGavin McCallum, Chief Operating Officer, Clyde Blowers Capital
Gavin is actively involved in developing and supporting the growth strategies in CBC’s portfolio businesses.  Currently, he manages CBC’s investments in the Moventas and Parsons Peebles assets. Gavin has responsibility for the continual development of CBC’s Operating Model. Additionally Gavin is a member of CBC’s Investment Committee.

Gavin holds an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he was Sloan Fellow and a MA (hons) in economics from the University of Aberdeen. He has 20 years’ experience in Leadership, Commercial Management, M&A, Business Development and Operational roles in the Engineering, Oil and Gas and Power sectors. He spent 15 years working for BP in the UK, US and Middle East. Gavin was a key player in the creation and growth of BP Alternative Energy – where BP made a $10b commitment to create one of the world’s largest and most diversified renewable energy companies. He has extensive experience investing in, growing and leading businesses in the energy sector from oil and gas to power generation including renewables.

Strategists at Work

Robert’s  research interests lie in the areas of strategy development and organizational change.  He has a particular interest in what people do in the development of strategy. He has studied away days and workshops as well as conducting longitudinal studies with a range of FTSE-listed organizations, major public-sector organizations and SMEs.  In his work he has used complexity theory, narrative, learning and a range of other processual explanations of how and why strategy and change occur. His recent book, co-authored with Donald MacLean, entitled Strategic Management: Strategists at Work is a practical, step-by-step guide to creating strategies that combine both logical rigour and cultural fit with a particular organization.  His work has been described as combining a blend of practical insights and deep wisdom from the best of traditional and contemporary thinking about strategy.

Fail-Fast – Creating a people centred workplace that encourages learning

Sarah is Director of Manufacturing for Optos Plc, a UK based company which designs, develops and manufactures its core ultra-widefield retinal imaging devices.  She is responsible for providing leadership and direction for staff in the manufacturing facility, and has a strong understanding of cGMP and LEAN philosophies and methodologies.

Sarah holds a BSc(Hons) in Laser Physics and Optoelectronics and an MSc in Laser Engineering having started her career as a Laser Engineer with Thales Optronics she joined Optos as a Senior Optical Engineer in January 2000 and  progressed through  Operations and R&D teams in to her current role as the Director of Manufacturing. She is currently the Chairperson of the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Board.

People are at the heart of how Sarah runs her manufacturing division. Since taking over as the Director of Manufacturing she has managed to create an environment where people have fun, they are engaged, open and participative. In her talk Sarah will give real practical examples of what worked and what didn’t from the perspective of both the management and the workforce.
